If you’re looking for ways to bring some shine back to your smile, you may want to consider veneers. These thin, easy-to-install coverings are a cosmetic dentistry option to correct common issues like stained, crooked, or chipped teeth. Not every type of veneer is the same, however, and there are a wide variety of options available. Keep reading to find out how long you can expect your dental veneers to last, along with some tips and tricks to keep them looking fresh for years to come.

How long do veneers last?

Your veneers’ lifespan depends on the type of material they’re made from. Some may last only a few years, while others might last a decade or more with proper care.

Porcelain veneers

These thin, ceramic shells are one of the most durable veneer options and are a common cosmetic dentistry procedure. They can last anywhere between 10 to 15 years before needing to be replaced.

Composite resin veneers

Using composite resin veneers can be a great choice if you’re looking for a quicker and less expensive solution. These veneers typically last between 5 to 7 years but require less time to install up front.

Snap-on veneers

Looking to get a sense of what you’d look like with veneers or just want a less permanent option? Snap-on veneers attach to your teeth like a retainer or mouthguard, allowing you to look your best without the commitment of traditional veneers. However, this flexibility comes with a cost, as snap-on veneers generally have the shortest lifespan of all veneer options, usually only 3 to 5 years.

How to maintain your veneers

No matter what kind of veneers you have, there are some easy ways to maintain them and extend their lifespan:

  • Brush your teeth: Veneers may help protect your smile, but they can’t prevent cavities on their own. Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to maintain good oral hygiene. If you do end up with a cavity, the treatment may be more complicated due to the veneer.1
  • Be aware of teeth grinding: Grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw can put unwanted pressure on your veneers. Consider using a bite guard at night to help avoid any cracking or other damage from grinding.1
  • Avoid biting hard materials: Chewing on ice cubes, biting fingernails, and opening hard plastic with your teeth can all affect the lifespan of your veneers. You might also avoid other tough foods like hard candies, apples, or nuts.2
  • Protect your teeth during physical activity: If you play sports, protect your veneers by wearing a mouthguard when out on the field.1
  • Prevent discoloration: Certain foods and drinks, like coffee, berries, or wine, may alter the color of your veneers, causing them to no longer match your teeth. This may require pricey cleanings or replacements.

With these simple tips, you can keep your veneers looking great and lasting. The most important thing you can do is let your dentist know if you feel any cracks, discomfort, or other issues that may indicate you need replacements. Treating problems early can avoid bigger complications down the road.
